Day 149: Lourdes to Angouleme - Wed 1 Oct, 2014

Day 149: Lourdes to Angouleme - Wed 1 Oct, 2014
A sleep-in sounded good but was spoiled by a phonecall rousing us from deep sleep at 4am. No answer and a click after two mumbled "hello's?" Was more than annoying as couldn't return to proper sleep. Sunshine very pleasant though, and emails proved there was no bad news overnight, so starting the day afresh (Ann's first day of retirement!). Passed large airport (these planes would have to have a large section dedicated to the non-ambulatory, and taxis that can take wheelchairs). Stopped for fuel and groceries, then through Tarbes, with its statue of the equestrian Ferdinand Foch outside military legionnaire base/school, all camouflage uniforms and red berets. Plenty of corn ready for harvesting, small cobs and minimum cellulosic material - given the high number of signs indicating varieties, looks like its tailored to biofuel industry. Sent email enquiry re customising chateau and champagne Loire Valley tour.

Ate our fresh baguettes in the churchyard at Cahuzac du Adour opposite maison almost totally overgrown with vines, so pretty in autumn colours. Took new piece of road and joined highway headed towards Bordeaux. Got a reply from enquiry re customised tour - much too expensive for the four of us. The advertised one on website was half the price but only includes one big ticket chateaux. Decided as its end of season we will take our chance on arrival in Tours tomorrow.

Angouleme road blocked by firemen – looked appraisingly at our camper trucks, nodded, and "walked" us over concrete edge of road, across grass to other side, all watching approvingly. In caravan park, met friendly Aussie couple Jane and Matt, who have been travelling Europe, Baltics, Scandinavia by motorhome or caravan (largely since 2008!!).
